In the 19th century, the Northington family established a ferry service across the Cape Fear River, and remnants of the Northington Lock and Dam can still be seen in the park today. These structures were part of a larger effort to improve navigation along the river, which was a vital transportation route at the time.
In 1969, after years of advocacy by local citizens, Raven Rock State Park was officially established. The park was created to preserve the area’s natural beauty and historical significance, and it has since become a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
